As the temperature rises, there’s nothing as peaceful as taking a refreshing dive in natural water to escape the busy city life of Kathmandu. The summer season, especially June and July, is the perfect time to explore and enjoy the stunning waterfalls. Visiting a nearby waterfall can be a perfect weekend gateway. Hiking around the lush green surroundings and the beautiful trails can be a perfect ride with your friends to create amazing memories. With Kathmandu’s summer heat in full swing, these four waterfalls are a must-see for anyone looking to refresh their mind and mood.
Simba Falls
Simba Falls is a stunning combination of five small waterfalls nestled at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level in the dense green forests of the hilly regions. Named for its refreshingly cold waters (derived from the Tamang language), Simba Falls is located in the Mahankal Rural Municipality, Lalitpur, about 40 – 42 kilometers from Kathmandu.
Visiting Simba Falls is a perfect weekend activity. To reach this beautiful waterfall, you must hike for about 45 minutes to a 1-hour trek through the last vehicle stop. This hike is both challenging and adventurous, following a steep narrow path through the dense forests and rocky terrain. As you hike, you will be surrounded by the sounds of birds chirping, rustling leaves, and the distant sound of the waterfall. I recommend you climb the opposite hilltop to fully enjoy the breathtaking view of Simba Falls.
The perfect time to visit Simba Falls is during August and September as the weather is ideal for a hike, the surroundings are full of greenery, and the waterfalls are at their fullest.

Tindhare Waterfall
Located at Kaphal Danda in Roshi Rural Municipality, Kavrepalanchowk district (Around 73 Km away from Kathmandu), Tindhare Jharana, also known as Bahubali Jharana. This waterfall gained massive popularity for its resemblance to the iconic waterfall from the Bollywood blockbuster Bahubali.
Located approximately 67- 70 km from Kathmandu, Tindhare Jharana offers an adventure journey for the visitors. The trail to the waterfall is a bit slippery and well not marked. Therefore you must ask for directions from the locals along the way if you don’t want to get lost in the forest. If you are traveling in your private vehicle make sure your tank is full and the vehicle is in good condition as the roads are quite off-road.
Apart from enjoying the waterfall, you can explore the Namobuddha Monastery located at Dhulikhel on the way. Moreover, you can explore the Newari and Tamang cultural villages on the way and have some delicious local cuisine.
Route: Kathmandu- Dhulikhel- Namobudhha- Dapcha – Rosi Gaupalika– Kafal dada
Mailung Waterfall/ Bhange Jharana
Mailung Waterfall is a purely natural attraction located in the Rasuwa district, a relatively remote region of Nepal. It is located 70Km far from Kathmandu, it is better to plan a 2-day trip. This waterfall has not been explored much but it is a perfect representation of the beauty of Nepal’s landscapes.
It takes an exciting off-road trip through the stunning scenery of the Rasuwa area to get to Mailung Waterfall. The road itself is an adventure, passing through natural landscapes and challenging terrain that make the entire trip worthwhile. Mailung Waterfall has a wonderful view of the stunning landscape. The long waterfall provides a calm and captivating sense with its slow, graceful water motion. This destination is ideal for a day trip since it gives visitors the chance to enjoy the spectacular scenery and enjoy the amazing natural beauty.
Route: Kathmandu- Kakani- Bidur- Nuwakot Durbar- Trishuli Bridge- Mailung Jharana
Mohini Jharana
While many have visited Chitlang and Markhu multiple times, Mohini Jharana remains unexplored. Mohini Jharana is a hidden gem located just 45 minutes from Markhu’s Kulekhani boating area and is one of the best places to spend a day off or a weekend with family or friends. There is a natural pool right next to the waterfall, where you can swim and also have a small picnic.
After experiencing the beautiful Mohini Jharana you can also visit to Chitlang village, Bhedafarm, and Khulekhani damside. Well apart from that you can visit or stay in Chitlang farmhouse for refreshment and experience old Newari art and architecture.
From Markhu, if you go from a boat, then you have to do a 20-minute of boat ride which costs around Rs.120 per person. Whereas if you take your bike it’s around 45 minutes ride. Well, I suggest you take your bike to experience the beautiful landscape, farms, forests, and rivers. Whereas If there’s rain then, roads might be slippery and the river might be too big for the water crossing.
Route: Kalanki- Chandragiri- Thankot- Chitlang- Kulekhani Markhu- 2.30 hours, Markhu- Mohini Jharna 45 minutes
