Introduction:
Boudhanath, located on the outskirts of Kathmandu valley, is one of the largest Buddhist monasteries in the world. Boudhanath Monastery is often touted as “the center of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal.” The Stupa is best cited for its eight eyes on all four sides of the tower, each of eight eyes representing an important event in the lifetime of Buddha. The Stupa being the place of worship containing Buddhist relics, and Boudhanath, is one of the favorite places in Kathmandu for anyone!
Being one of the oldest Buddhist Monasteries in the world, Boudhanath is said to be constructed in 14th century. The earlier Stupa was destroyed by Mughals and is a UNESCSO World Heritage Cultural Site as of 1979.
Once you enter the gates of Boudhanath complex, you need to visit circumambulating around the large Stupa that looks like a mandala. Hosting a tangle of streets filled with shops selling religious items, restaurants and guesthouses, Boudhanath is considered one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Nepal.
