Indigenous People Trail takes you through some of the indigenous settlements of eastern and central Nepal. The trek is a blend of the cultural and natural journey into villages bound by Thulo Sailung peak in the North, the Sun Koshi River in the South, and Tama Koshi River in the East. Introduced in 2009, the entire trail is nestled against a magnificent Himalayan backdrop including Numbur, Gaurishankar, and Langtang ranges. The villages are mostly inhabited by local Indigenous tribes including Newar, Sherpa, Thami, and Majhi.

 

The 11-day trek begins upon your arrival in Kathmandu. The journey begins with a scenic drive through fertile villages to rural farmland of Mudhe village. You’ll begin trekking through the forested path and small settlements. You’ll walk past Deurali, Kholakharka, and Surke villages to arrive at Doramba. Most the settlements encountered until Doramba accounts for indigenous tribes of Sherpa, Thami, and Tamang. Kholakharka is also the highest point on the trek. The trek also crosses a few river en route to Doramba. Afterward, you’ll begin descending through the picturesque setting of Khandadevi, Dongme, and Lubughat to arrive at Nepalthok. You’ll encounter the indigenous settlement belonging to ethnic tribes of Tamang, Thami, Majhi, Newar, and Hyolmo. The total population of Thami accounts for just 30,000. Majhi tribe, on the other hand, are one of the most marginalized community. They make a living by fishing or boat transport. You will enjoy the homestay services during the trek among these hospitable bunch of people. Leaving Nepalthok, you’ll drive to Dhulikhel, one of the most popular hill-stations in Nepal. Located in the outskirts of Kathmandu, Dhulikhel is frequently visited by both locals and tourists. The trip concludes upon your return to Kathmandu.

Itineraries

Your arrival in Kathmandu is followed by a transfer to your hotel. Our company representative will help you with all the stuff after you land at Tribhuvan International Airport. After you reach the hotel, you can rest and relax or explore the nearby areas.

Leaving Kathmandu, you’ll drive to reach Mudhe village which lies almost 54km east of Kathmandu. You will stop on mid-way for lunch and then continue through the narrow road and lushly forested trail to reach Mudhe. Once at Mudhe, you’ll begin preparing for the trek and then continue trekking towards Deurali village.

You will wake up with the scenic view of the surrounding hills and streams. Today you’ll trek towards Kholakharka, a small Sherpa village. Once at Kholakharka, you’ll make a short hike to Thulo Sailung to enjoy the wonderful vistas of the mountains including those in Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Gauri Shankar, and even Everest ranges.

Leaving Kholakharka, you’ll begin towards a small beautiful settlement of Rajbhir. You’ll make the descent and cross the beautiful Sailung forest to reach Rajbhir. Here, you can visit the local Rajbhir monastery and take blessing from the local priests. You’ll pass two different villages inhabited by Sherpa and Tamang tribes to finally arrive at Surke.

The trail leading from Surke to Doramba accounts for small settlements inhabited by Thami people. You can witness the cultural program of Thami people at Tin Dhare village before entering Doramba village. The four hours of the trek through the forested hillside and green terraced fields will bring you to Doramba. The entire trek runs along the Chhitikunj Dada.

Leaving Doramba behind, you will hike to Agleshwori Danda. Agleshwori Danda is considered a sacred Hindu shrine frequented by many Hindu pilgrims. You can enjoy the view of the Mahabharata green range and the Himalaya along the way to Khandadevi. The trek spanning five hours will last until Khandadevi. The final stretch of the trek climbs to the top of the Tarebhir and heads downhill to the temple.

You’ll wake up with the wonderful view of the nearby Himalaya and beautiful sunrise. From here, you’ll begin trekking through a long ride of pine forest to reach Dongme village. The trail reaches Panighat Bazaar and continues numerous ascents and descents. The trail also crosses numerous human settlements of different ethnic communities to reach Dongme.

As the trek nears its end, you leave the Dongme village. Now, you’ll begin descending and walk along the Sunkoshi River. The day ends at Lubughat village that is mostly inhabited by Majhi tribe of people. The word Majhi is a local term for fishermen. They are one of the marginalized communities in Nepal. Here, you can observe their lifestyle, culture, and the means they use to earn their living.

Leaving Lubughat, you’ll begin trekking through the forested path towards Sunkoshi River. You’ll the Sunkoshi River bridge and walk almost 45 minutes through the valley to reach to Nepalthok. Nepalthok is a scenic village located in the historical Sindhuli district of eastern Nepal. From here, you’ll catch a commute and drive almost 50km west to reach the popular hill-station of Dhulikhel.

After enjoying the sunrise and exploring the old town of Newari inhabited Dhulikhel, you’ll drive back to Kathmandu. You’ll drive through Araniko Highway to reach Kathmandu. You can choose to visit the UNESCO designated site of Bhaktapur Durbar Square en route. Once you reach Kathmandu, you’ll be escorted to your hotel.

As the trip comes to an end, you can visit some of the major attractions in Kathmandu. These explorations can vary upon the schedule of your flight. A company representative will keep you company to complete any formalities.
