Lumba Sumba Trek explores far eastern Nepal and basically follows the trail on the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek. Being one of the less traveled treks, you get to enjoy the pristine environment and diverse culture of this region. The route passes through both the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area and Makalu Barun National Park and allows you to enjoy the biodiversity of these protected areas. Enjoy trekking along the off-the-beaten trails under the Kanchenjunga massif.
The 16-day Lumba Sumba Trek starts with your arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. After the necessary preparation and briefings, you head to Biratnagar via airplane and then to Suketar from where the trek starts. The trail leads you to many beautiful villages inhabited by ethnic people like Sherpa, Rai, Gurung, and Limbu in the villages of Chirwa and Phembu. En route, you get a chance to discover the beautiful flora and fauna of eastern Nepal. If luck is in your favor, then you can see the rare red panda as well as snow leopards at some parts of the trial. The trek then makes way to Olangchun Gola and Langmale villages in the Arun Valley. The trail goes along the Tamor River and Arun River so, you get to enjoy the beautiful sceneries as well. The trail follows the Tamor River all the way to Lumba Sumba (5159m) and enjoys the views of the Lumba Sumba ranges. Along with these, you can also get to enjoy the panoramic views of Kanchenjunga (8586m), Makalu (8463m), and their neighboring peaks. As some parts of the trail can get difficult, it is better if you have trekked to high and rugged terrain before. The best time for this trek is spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November).

Upon arriving in Kathmandu (Tribhuvan International Airport), a Cold Feet representative will meet you and help you transfer to your hotel by private bus. Enjoy a free evening to explore Kathmandu and recover from your jet-lag. Meet the Cold Feet staff during a short pre-tour briefing before dinner.
You catch an early flight to Biratnagar from Kathmandu. From there you catch your second flight of the day to Suketar, Taplejung. After resting for a while, you start to trek to Mitlung. The trail proceeds along the banks of Tamor River and is filled with teashops and scenic views of the river all the way to Mitlung.
After breakfast, you continue the trail along Tamor River. When you reach Sisne Gaon, the trail first starts to ascend then descend to Sinwa Bazar. After having lunch here, the next stop is Tawa Village and from there you ascend to Thauwa. Thereon, you descend down to Chirwa where you stay overnight.
The trail on this day runs along the Tamor River. En route, you can enjoy the beautiful cardamom gardens and forests filled with uttis (alder) trees. Continuing on, you cross the Minthuwa River over the Tamor River. You stop at Taplethok where you can visit the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area checkpoint. After having lunch and resting, you head to Phembu.
The trail today is filled with scenic views of forests filled with rhododendrons and mountain landscape. En route, you can also spot red pandas, if you are lucky. After crossing the Tamor River via a suspension bridge, you reach Iladanda where you can enjoy the amazing views of the river and Tanga Himal ranges. Then you head to an area with big landslide and after crossing that you reach Selap Kharka where KCAP headquarters is located.
The first stop after breakfast is Jongim from where you can see picturesque views of the surrounding hills. Then, you cross a suspension bridge and walk uphill to the next stop, Ramite. En route, you can enjoy the magnificent forests and spot wildlife like a red panda. The trail for today ends at Olangchun Gola, a beautiful Sherpa village. Here, you can also visit the Deki Chholing Gompa which is over 450 years old.
The trails exit Olangchun Gola and hug the trail alongside the Tamor River. The trekking trail today is full of wilderness and the human settlements are pretty sparse too. The trail leads you to a thick forest of rhododendrons and alders. You stop at Jadak for lunch. A few hours later, you reach Langmale after crossing the Tamor Bridge.
After an early breakfast, you head onto the trail that runs along the banks of Tamor River. En route, you may get a chance to spot snow leopards or red pandas. The trail continues through a thick forest filled with rhododendrons. At Tangchetar, you stop for lunch and ascend along the sandy beds of the Tamor River. Finally, you reach Pass Camp.
Today you climb and cross the Lumba Sumba peak. So the day starts after an early breakfast and you head to the trail after cleaning up the camp area. The narrow trail to the peak is difficult as it goes through step trails. After a few hours, you reach Lumba Sumba Pass (5159m) and can enjoy the scenic views of Kanchenjunga and Makalu ranges. Then, you cross over a river to descend to Chauri Kharka.
After breakfast, you head for today’s destination, Thudam a small Sherpa village, the first village you reach after crossing over the Lumba Sumba Pass (5159m). The trail is downhill and at one point you can see a crossroad where one leads to Thudam and the other leads to Tibet. You cross the Modek Chheju River at Samne and continue the gradual descent to reach Thudam.
Today you trek along the bank of Modek Chheju River and, en route, you can enjoy the beauty of the mountain landscape. You can also see the Makalu range during this part of the trail. If you are lucky you can also spot some of the rare animals of this region. The trail heads to the top of the Himaloso Danda and descends to te Yak Kharka.
During this part of the trek, you will encounter many other small trails. The trail eventually leads to Arun River so, you can enjoy the beautiful sceneries of the river and the surrounding landscape. After crossing the Arun River, the trail goes uphill and ends at Chyamtang. The trek first heads to Hikchu and enters the Makalu Barun National Park. Shortly, you arrive at Chyamtang.
After breakfast, you head on to the trail that leads you to Arun Valley. You trek through rhododendron forests and pass by Chepuwa village from where you can see impressive views of the Makalu range. This part of the trail is also famous for bird watching. The trail crosses the Chhunjam River to descend to Hatiya.
Today, you trek along the banks of Arun River. After a few hours, you reach the intersection point of Arun and Barun Rivers. As you trek onward, you reach Syaksila and continue towards the Makalu Barun Buffer Zone. After having lunch, you walk towards Gola, a small village inhabited by Rai and Sherpa people.
The trail for today continues along the Arun River. En route, you can enjoy scenic views of paddy fields, hills, and settlement areas. The trail gets easier as you descend and you reach the first stop Pathibhara. From here, you continue the trek passing Simma and Belgutitar on the way.
This is the last day to trek to take in all the beautiful landscape of this region. After breakfast, you head to Khandbari, the district headquarters of Sankhuwasabha. The first stop is Nam where you have lunch and rest. Then, you trek until you reach Khandbari. A bus that takes you to Biratnagar after resting at Khandbari.
From Biratnagar, you catch an early flight to Kathmandu. After arriving at the capital, you can do some souvenir shopping or relax at a coffee shop. If you are tired, you can visit the wellness centers in the valley. Alternatively, you can visit some of the UNESCO world heritage sites in Kathmandu including Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, and Swayambhunath.
