Makalu-Barun Valley Trek is another of our wonderful trekking packages that lets you to explore the Makalu-Barun National Park and conservation area spread over the area of over 1500 square kilometers which extends from low ranges at 500m to the high Nepal Himalayas at over 8000m. In fact, this remote terrain stretches east from Sagarmatha National Park, between the high plateaus of Tibet and deep subtropical gorge carved by Arun River. You can enjoy the spectacular views of rugged Himalayan Peaks including Mount Makalu, Mount Chamlang, and Mount Baruntse. And well, Makalu-Barun Valley provides you the stunning contrasts where high waterfalls cascade into deep gorges and colorful landscape along with the craggy rocks rise from lush green forests.
This unique landscape shelters some of the last pristine mountain ecosystems on the earth. It’s the home of over 3000 species of flowering plants, 75 species of mammals, and 440 species of birds including the endangered Clouded Leopard, Musk Deer and Red Pandas. And this remarkable biodiversity is considered to be of global significance.

Upon arriving in Kathmandu (Tribhuvan International Airport), a Cold Feet representative will meet you and help you transfer to your hotel by private bus. Enjoy a free evening to explore Kathmandu and recover from your jet-lag. Meet the Cold Feet staff during a short pre-tour briefing before dinner.
A full-day guided tour around Kathmandu city's historical and cultural landmarks. Visit Bouddhanath Stupa and Pashupatinath Temple, the most important sites of Buddhism and Hinduism in Nepal. Catch the playful antics of the monkeys and beautiful city views at Swayambhunath temple. Get lost in Kathmandu's old city bazaars, public squares, and former royal palaces at Durbar Square.
Today, after having breakfast, we will check in to airport for taking the available morning flight to Tumlingtar from Kathmandu. We will stay overnight in Tumlingtar.
From Tumlingtar, we walk to Kumhalgaon and follow the trail that passes to the east. We then begin an ascent between Arun, Koshi and Sabha Khola observing the wonderful view of the huge Chhamlang massif. And at the top of the ascent, you will come to Dhunge Dhara. After walking for a while, you will get to Khandbari. We stay overnight at Khandbari.
Climbing to Nayabazar, after a while you reach Mani Bhanjyang and further climb in the bamboo forest along the ridge to Arun Than and then transverses across the hillside, still climbing through fields and bamboo groves you will get to Sheka. Keep climbing to the Tamang village of Bhotebas which offers a spectacular view of Chhamlang, Makalu and Jaljale Himal. Then finally, we reach at Chichila.
Passing the small settlement of Baisake and Kuwapani, you will reach to Hururu. The route climbs and then drops down into the deep oak forest before arriving at Mure village inhabited by Sherpa and Rai people. Descending on a rocky trail, you will reach to Num.
The trail descends steeply through the fields of Lumbang and from here the trail becomes steeper through jungle to suspension bridge over the Arun Koshi. From the bridge, the trail climbs to Sedua.
The trail today climbs and then passes the National Park Forest Project and reaches Manigaon. From Manigaon, the trail turns west and makes a gradual climb to Chyaksadanda and Ropesa. The route crosses meadows and several streams before coming to the Sherpa Village of Tashigaon which is a large way to Makalu Base Camp.
Climbing over the ridge and ascending through the forest, you will reach Chipla. The route now becomes steeper and joins the ridge and before reaching Khongma, a flat altitude meadow.
From Khongma, we will climb up all the time having beautiful views of Chhamlang peak 6 and peak 7. The trail climbs over a ridge to Ghungru La and descends to a small lake and then climbs steeply up to Shipton La. Descending to Keke La and making a further descend through a forest of firs, you will get to Mumbuk.
From Mumbuk, the trail descends down steeply and turns westwards along the bottom of the Barun Valley, and passes a small cave, crosses several streams and finally Barun River on the long bridge before reaching Yangle Kharka, a large meadow.
Climbing gently from Yangle Kharka, you will pass Nghe Kharka. Following the Barun valley, you will pass Riphuk Kharka and making a short climb, you will reach Jhak Kharka and the meadow of Yak Kharka. The traili climbs over a ridge beyond Yak Kharka and ascends alongside a moraine formed by the lower Barun Glacier. From here, you will have an excellent view of peak 3 and peak 5 which finally brings you to Merek.
From Merek, the trail climbs up and you will reach to Shersong where there is a small stone hut. In shersong, you will also find a good camp site in the Yak pasture. You may even get to interact with some of the locals.
From Shersong, the trail climbs gradually to a minor pass above Makalu Base Camp. You will have an excellent view of Makalu, Peak 6 and Peak 7, Baruntse, and the complete panorama of Everest and Lhotse.
Today, we will trek back to Yangle Kharka. We will stay overnight at Yangle Kharka.
Today, we will trek back to Mumbuk from Yangle Kharka, and stay there overnight.
Today, we will track back Khongma from Mumbuk, and stay there overnight.
This day, we will trek back to Tashigaon and stay there overnight.
We will trek back to Num today and stay there overnight.
Today, we will return back to Chichila from Num and stay there overnight.
We will trek back to Mani Bhanjyang today and stay there overnight.
This will be the final day of actual trekking today. We will trek back to Tumlingtar from Mani Bhanjyang and stay overnight at Tumlingtar.
Today, after having breakfast, we will check into the airport and catch the available flight to Kathmandu. In the evening, you will explore the Kathmandu city and enjoy the farewell dinner.
