Situated right at the border between Nepal and India, Sandakpur is known for its unparalleled sunrise views with surreal the Himalayan panorama. But it's not just the sunrise views which makes the Sandakpur Trek worth your while. The journey takes us to Ilam well-known throughout the world for its exquisite tea gardens and tea products. The trek constantly alters between the borders of Nepal and India while offering the best of the scenic beauty of both the countries. All in all, the virgin trails on the Sandakpur Trek lead to exquisite Himalayan views which are one of the very best around.
To begin the adventure, we take a domestic flight heading towards the airstrip at Bhadrapur. Thereafter, we make our way towards the trailhead at Pashupathinagar. The hilly hamlet forms the Nepali border connecting the nation with the Indian state of Darjeeling. As the trek begins, we head to the hamlet of Tumling on our first day of the trek. Then, we make our way up to Sandakpur hill station located at an altitude of 3636m. Here, we relish the mesmerizing views of sunset with the vistas of some of the highest mountains in the world. On a clear day, the view includes the Mt. Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,516m), Kanchenjunga (8,586m), and Makalu (8,481m). The next day, we continue our journey towards Chintapur enjoying the lush green valleys and pleasant hilly trails. Making our way to Maimajuwa, we begin our descending route heading back towards the Nepalese border. Reaching the hamlet of Mai Pokhari, we explore the lake of Mai and surrounding forests before heading back towards Barbate entering the district of Ilam before heading back to Bhadrapur to catch the flight back home.

Catch the playful antics of the monkeys and beautiful city views at Swayambhunath temple. Get lost in Kathmandu's old city bazaars, public squares, and former royal palaces at Durbar Square.
The day begins with a lovely flight as we exit the hills of the Kathmandu making our way towards the airstrip at Bhadrapur. Past the stunning hills of the valley, the journey turns south heading for Jhapa. Touching down at Bhadrapur, we take some time off to rest before making our way towards the town of Pashupathinagar.
Heading away from the Nepalese border, the journey makes its way down west towards the market place of Phikal before turning north past the Barbote temple. Past the Jogmai River, we continue through the lush green forests alongside the Gupte Stream to reach the settlement at Naya Bazaar. Enjoying the rural hilly landscape the journey brings us to Jaubari before descending down to Tumling.
Journeying through the forested lands, the majority of the day takes us through unnamed roads often through complete solitude. Covered by the lush green forests which forms so much of the landscape in the hilly regions, the journey takes us alongside the Nepalese Indian border crossing it on multiple occasions. Reaching Sandakpur, we take some time off to enjoy the mesmerizing Himalayan views.
An early day as we head towards the hill station of Sandakpur to enjoy the glorious views of the sunrise. As the sun slowly rises over the majestic summits of Mt. Everest (8,848m), Mt Lhotse (8,516m), Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586m), and Mt. Makalu (8,481m) the entire Himalayas are colored golden. After taking some time to enjoy the pleasant Himalayan sunrise, we make our way to Chintapur.
At an altitude of 3500m, Chintapur offers a lovely chance to bid farewell to the mesmerizing Himalayan panorama. After witnessing the views, we begin our descending journey down towards the south. Crossing the Mai Khola River, the trail enters the dense forests and heads past isolated land. Adorned with rhododendron trees, the day offers a relaxing walk before Maimajuwa.
Following the banks of the Mai Khola River, we continue our descent crosses the villages of Mabu and Sulbung. The trail then joins the roadways ascending towards Mai Pokhari. Mai Pokhari is well known for the lake of Mai itself which is believed to be the abode of the snake God Basuki. Surrounded by forests on all sides it is said that one can never see all 9 edges of the river from a single spot.
The final day of our trek we make our way out of Mai Pokhari descending towards Barbate. The journey is a pleasant one heading through lovely tea gardens and pasture lands. We also pass several tea factories from where you can pick up souvenirs for those at back home. Descending through the cluster of settlements, we reach Barbate which marks the end of our trek.
The final day of the journey, we head back towards the town of Bhadrapur. Exiting Barbate, the journey heads over to Ilam. Taking some time off to enjoy the hilly town, we drive back to Bhadrapur to board the domestic flight heading back to the capital city. Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, you can choose to spend the rest of the day as you wish.
